The captain was very friendly, he even cooked us some wonderful fish soup. Unfortunately we didn't see the aurora because the weather was very cloudy. But overall we had a good time on the boat.

    The thrill of the chase

The most exciting aspect of a Northern Lights cruise is the sense of anticipation. The Northern Lights are elusive, so there's always an element of surprise as you wait for the sky to ignite with color. Guides keep adjusting the route to maximize your chances of seeing the lights. Every minute spent scanning the sky builds excitement, and when the auroras appear, it feels like you've won the jackpot.

    Enjoy the delicious Arctic cuisine

Several cruises take your Arctic adventure to the next level by combining it with local cuisine. Savor a meal of fresh, locally sourced ingredients like Arctic char, reindeer, or seasonal vegetables, all prepared with a modern twist. Even on cruises that don't offer full meals, you can enjoy snacks, soup, and warm drinks as you wait for the lights to appear.

    Expert guidance and local insights

During the cruise, an English-speaking guide enrich your experience with fascinating tales and facts. They'll unravel the science behind the auroras, share local legends, and point out constellations sparkling in the crisp, clear sky. You'll also learn about the Arctic ecosystem and Tromso's cultural heritage.

    A sky full of stars

Beyond the magical Northern Lights, the Arctic skies offer a stunning stargazing experience. With minimal light pollution at sea, the stars become brighter and more vivid than anything you're likely to see in urban environments. You'll see constellations, shooting stars, and the Milky Way in all their glory, making the cruise a celestial double feature!

    Comfort and convenience

Worried about the Arctic chill? Fear not! All cruise boats feature warm indoor lounges where you can relax, sip hot drinks, and even share your experiences in real time, thanks to onboard Wi-Fi. Step outside on the viewing deck when the lights appear, then cozy back up indoors—it's the best of both worlds.

    Encounters with Arctic wildlife

While you're gazing upwards, don't forget to look around! The Arctic Ocean is teeming with life. From seals basking on ice floes to puffins darting over the waves and even the occasional humpback whale breaching nearby, a cruise offers a front-row seat to nature's marine wonders.

    Unbeatable photo opportunities

The combination of the Northern Lights, the starlit sky, and the calm waters of the fjords create countless opportunities for stunning photographs. The reflection of the auroras on the water, framed by the silhouettes of snow-capped mountains, makes for a photographer's dream.

    The majestic Arctic landscape

Even without the Northern Lights, the scenery around Tromso is jaw-dropping. As your boat glides through the Arctic fjords, you'll be treated to views of dramatic snow-capped mountains, secluded islands, and the occasional frozen shoreline. The clear winter air makes these landscapes more stunning, with the distant peaks of the Lyngen Alps often visible.

Frequently asked questions about Northern Lights cruise Tromso

How likely is it that I'll see the Northern Lights on a cruise in Tromso?

While no tour can guarantee Northern Lights sightings, Tromso is one of the best places in the world to see the lights due to its location in the Aurora Oval. Guides go above and beyond to ensure a successful Aurora sighting by monitoring weather and aurora activity forecasts and adjusting the route to reach the best viewing locations.

How early should I book a Northern Lights cruise Tromso?

It's best to book your Northern Lights cruise as early as possible, especially during peak season (December to February), as these tours can fill up quickly. Booking at least a few weeks in advance ensures you have a spot, and if you're visiting during a popular holiday period, such as Christmas or New Year's, it's wise to book even earlier.

Are there bathroom facilities on board?

Yes, all Northern Lights cruises in Tromso come equipped with toilets. Most modern boats have comfortable indoor saloons with fully functioning restroom facilities, ensuring that you can enjoy the trip without any inconvenience.

How far out do the cruises go from Tromso?

Most Northern Lights cruises stay relatively close to Tromso, venturing into the surrounding fjords and waterways where the skies are darkest. You won't be traveling far into the open ocean. The routes vary depending on where the guides expect the best aurora activity.

What kind of boats are used for Northern Lights cruises?

The boats vary depending on the cruise you choose. Some tours use eco-friendly electric boats, which provide a quiet and smooth sailing experience. Others may use traditional fishing boats, larger ferries with indoor lounges, or luxury catamarans equipped with open-deck seating and plush interiors. All boats are designed to offer a comfortable viewing experience, whether you're indoors or outside.

Is seasickness a concern during the cruise?

Seasickness can be a concern for some, especially on nights with choppy waters. However, most Tromso Northern Lights cruises sail through fjords, which tend to be calmer than the open sea. If you're prone to seasickness, it's a good idea to take precautions, like bringing motion sickness medication or acupressure bands. Luxury catamarans also tend to offer a smoother ride.

Are Northern Lights cruises wheelchair accessible?

Some cruises are wheelchair accessible, but it's essential to check this before booking. While many boats are equipped with ramps and accessible facilities, not all of them may be designed to cater to special mobility needs.
