Helpful tips for your Tromso reindeer feeding tour

  • Approach calmly: Reindeer are gentle but can be startled. Let them come to you, follow the guide’s instructions, and avoid sudden movements. This ensures a safe and ethical reindeer feeding experience in Tromso.
  • Feed responsibly: Use only the provided food when feeding reindeer. Overfeeding or giving personal snacks can harm them and disturb the animals’ routine.
  • Dress for Arctic conditions: Layers are essential. Thermal base layers, insulated jackets, hats, and gloves help you stay comfortable while feeding reindeer or waiting outdoors for the Northern Lights.
  • Footwear for snow and ice: Wear waterproof boots with grip. Snow-covered paths can be slippery, especially near feeding areas or sledding tracks.
  • Optional reindeer sledding: Listen carefully to the guide for safety and instructions. The ride is smooth, but knowing how to balance and handle the sled ensures the best experience.
  • Family guidance: Children enjoy interacting with reindeer, but must be supervised at all times. Teach them to be gentle and patient while feeding the animals.

Although I was skeptical about taking a tour on a bus with 50 people, I can say that my experience was absolutely wonderful. We arrived not far from Tromsø, but the view was breathtaking—both the landscape and the aurora borealis, which kept us company throughout the entire tour. The tea and cookies before heading back were a nice touch.

We went to a beautiful location, extremely well organised, Margot, our guide was amazing, seating, campfire, hot chocolate and hotdogs by the fire, even a heated tent for a loo was great for the girls. Never to be forgotten. First Class tour. Whilst seeing the lights cannot be guaranteed the arrangements, location and guide were superb. Bonus, we saw an amazing display of lights which continued for 2 - 3 hours and then safely delivered back to our accomodation by the guide and her great driver, Gregor who also worked hard to set up and clear camp in double quick time at the end of the evening, to get us all on our way back to Tromso.

Feeding the reindeer and the reindeer-sled ride were absolutely fantastic — definitely the highlights of the day. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see the Northern Lights. The stories about Sámi culture were really interesting, and the traditional meal was nice as well, but it wasn’t a three-course dinner as advertised — we received a hot drink, some biscuits, and the main dish.
